‘The kids have lost so much’: Parents, students upset after Mooresville HS cancels prom

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Many students and parents are upset after Mooresville High School announced it was canceling prom this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The kids have lost so much already this year,” parent Jennifer Cordell said.

The cancellation sparked outrage from some parents who blasted the school’s decision on Facebook. Many said it is premature since the prom is usually held in late April, and the governor’s orders continue to change.

“We don’t even know where we are going to be come time for prom,” Cordell said.

She wishes the district would be creative like several other local high schools. Some are holding outdoor proms, with food trucks and outdoor movies.

“We don’t want them to miss out on an experience,” parent Jamie Taylor said.

Her daughter missed out on her junior prom because of the pandemic and now, her senior prom too.

Taylor and some other mothers decided they’d form a prom committee. They’re putting together a small prom for their kids and their friends.

The mothers have even secured a local outdoor venue.
