Passerby claims to have witnessed teacher assault child outside Monroe pre-K center

MONROE, N.C. — Union County Public Schools is investigating after a person claimed to have witnessed a teacher assault a 4-year-old student on the playground at a pre-K center in Monroe.

The reported incident happened on Thursday at Walter Bicket Education Center on Lancaster Avenue.

A school district spokesperson said a community member who was passing by the school witnessed what happened and started a Facebook Live.

The district says it’s investigating a reported restraint involving teachers and a student, and it's working with the Monroe Police Department.

Below is the message that was sent home to families:

Good afternoon parents, this is Mr. Roess calling to inform you about an incident that occurred on campus today. We are working with the Monroe Police Department on an investigation related to a situation that occurred on the playground. During this time, a community member posted a Facebook Live recording with comments about her rendition of what occurred. At this time, due to the investigation, I am not at liberty to share additional details about this matter. I appreciation your cooperation.
