Pedestrian killed on E. Independence Blvd., according to paramedics

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was struck and killed by a vehicle Tuesday shortly before 8 p.m. on East Independence Boulevard south of Idlewild Road, paramedics confirmed.

There is no crosswalk at the intersection, but police said the man was walking across the major roadway.

According to police, a Ford Focus was driving southeast on east Independence when the driver hit and killed him.

The driver stayed at the scene and was as not injured.

Officers determined the driver was not impaired and speed did not play a role, but they believe the pedestrian had been drinking before the incident.

Channel 9 has extensive coverage of deadly pedestrian involved crashes on Independence Boulevard.

In one investigation, Channel 9 watched the roadway for months, capturing people running, walking, even riding hover boards on the 10-lane roadway with drivers going over 50 mph.

Despite new construction and foot traffic, there are no pedestrian bridges and just one crosswalk.
