UNION COUNTY, N.C. - A Rochester, Pennsylvania man is in jail awaiting extradition to North Carolina following an investigation conducted by the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

In late June 2018, deputies said they were told about a man who was having inappropriate conversations with a Union County teen.

Detectives said they started an investigation and found that the man and girl exchanged several sexually explicit messages with each other.

Detectives also said they found out the man sent nude images of himself to the teen and asked for images of her.

Investigators identified the alleged offender as 45-year-old Christian Winterhalter, who was listed on the Pennsylvania Sex Offender Registry.

Earlier in February, Union County detectives traveled to Pennsylvania to follow up on leads and with the assistance of Homeland Security agents and local police, Winterhalter was arrested.

Detectives and HSI agents said they searched Winterhalter's home and found evidence that supported the contact between him and the victim.

Police said Winterhalter remains in custody in Pennsylvania temporarily but will face numerous felony charges in North Carolina once they move him.

The charges include five counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of disseminating obscenity to a minor.

Sheriff Eddie Cathey commented, “We are grateful for the assistance that Homeland Security and local authorities in Beaver County, Pennsylvania provided. This case is a perfect example of how modern technology provides predators opportunities to exploit children but thankfully we have resources to bring them to justice.”
