Pickup truck driver killed when car hits him head-on in Caldwell County, troopers say

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man driving a pickup truck was killed when a car crossed into his lane in Caldwell County, hitting him head-on, troopers said.

Highway patrol said troopers went to Adako Road near Brown Mountain Beach Road just before 1:30 p.m. Monday for the deadly crash.

Investigators said a 2009 Honda Civic was heading south on Adako Road when it crossed the center line and collided with a 2022 Toyota Tacoma driving north.

Both the driver and the passenger inside the pickup truck were thrown from the vehicle, troopers said.

The truck’s driver, 53-year-old Harold Lee Mann Jr., of Lenoir, died at the scene, troopers said. His front-seat passenger was seriously hurt and was flown to a hospital in Tennessee, according to investigators.

Neither Mann nor his passenger were wearing their seatbelts, troopers said.

Both the driver, 16, and the passenger, 18, inside the Civic were taken to the hospital. Neither was seriously hurt and both were wearing seatbelts, troopers said.

Authorities said charges are pending the investigation and a discussion with the Caldwell County District Attorney’s Office.
