Police: 3 charged in shooting of 6-year-old, teenager

CHARLOTTE — Three men accused of shooting a 6-year-old boy and teenager in north Charlotte will go before a judge Monday.

Police arrested Roberto Garcia, 18, Tevin Mayweather, 29, and Christopher Willis, 21, in connection with the Friday night shooting.

Mayweather and Willis were charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Garcia and Willis are also facing drug charges.

Kayla Martin's brother was the 6-year-old who was shot.

Martin, 16, said she was standing outside her home at Davis Commons apartment with her brother and several other young people when the shooting began.

"He was crying, he said that his legs hurt. So I took my jacket off, put it on his leg and just waited for the ambulance," Martin said.

Police said a 17-year-old was also shot. They believe he was involved in some kind of argument with the suspects.

One neighbor says she and her kids had just come home from dinner.

"Had I made a decision to stay in the restaurant just a few minutes we probably would have been pulling in as they were shooting," the neighbor said.

Martin said she does not know the 17-year-old who was shot, or what led up to the shooting. She was grateful no one was killed.

"Just to see them put the baby on a gurney, it was just like wow," Martin said. "(I'm) very grateful that he's fine and he was talking to us last night. He's aware of what happened, the doctor says he was gonna be fine."
