Police hope residents get involved in crime watch after shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A mother who was shot during a burglary in her northeast Charlotte home is recovering Thursday hours after another surgery.

Police have few leads from Tuesday’s shooting and that has neighbors rattled.

Police are hoping this crime will drive neighbors to form a neighborhood watch.

That neighborhood where Semantha Bunce was shot is full of new homes and clean streets.

Some residents are concerned for their own safety.

“Because we don't feel safe anymore there, not anymore,” Claudia Garcia who lives a few blocks away from Bunce’s home said.

In August, someone broke into Garcia’s home.

“You work hard every day to get your stuff and somebody just goes there and (breaks) into and (gets) it,” Garcia said. “That's sad very sad.”

There have been three break-ins this year in the immediate area of Tuesday's shooting.

However, there have been nine home burglaries and armed robberies since May within in a half-mile of the shooting.

Garcia said she is past the point of being part of a community watch and plans to move from her home.
