Police identify man found shot to death on Fort Mill street

FORT MILL, S.C. — Police said a passerby found the body of 29-year-old La'Charles Govan in front of a Fort Mill church around 6 a.m. Thursday. They said when the passerby could not get a response from Govan, who had been shot, they called 911. His body was found in front of Jerusalem Baptist Church on Steele Street in Fort Mill.

Family members embraced one another near the crime scene after hearing the painful reality.

"He was good, he had two daughters," said Tammy Govan about her son, through tears.

His father expressed a message he hopes the killer will hear.

"We don't know what happened but we just want whoever did this to come to justice and let the healing begin," said the victim's father Charles Govan. "And we forgive them no matter what the situation is and we love whoever did it...because I know Jesus."

Records show La'Charles Govan had been released from the Mecklenburg County Jail just two days before on charges of drug possession, stolen property and no driver's license.

"He was like the average kid just finding his way in life and one thing I can say he was searching for God in these last few weeks and months he's been searching for Hod," said Charles Govan.

The father urged the community to stay calm and let the police complete their investigation.

Loved ones say Govan used to live in Fort Mill but most recently lived in Rock Hill. However, he still had family in the neighborhood where he was killed.

Police said they have developed a person of interest in the case but have not said who that person is.

Anyone with information should contact the Fort Mill Police Department at 803-547-2022 or Crimestoppers of York County at 877-409-4321.
