Suspicious item found at Concord Walmart 'not an explosive device'

CONCORD, N.C. — Emergency crews responded to reports of a suspicious item inside a Walmart in Concord Tuesday morning. After a response from the bomb squad, it was determined to not be an "explosive device."

The investigation happened at the Walmart off Concord Parkway South around 10:30 a.m.

Police said a Walmart employee found the item inside a shopping cart

Officials said shoppers from the Walmart and nearby businesses were evacuated as a precaution while Concord police continued their investigation.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene including Concord Police, the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office, Concord Fire, and the sheriff office's bomb squad unit.

From Chopper 9 SkyZoom, a bomb squad crew member was seen getting dressed in a blast suit. Then, he turned the shopping cart over, grabbed the item, and worked to assess it.

Police said the bomb squad determined it was not an explosive item, but did not say what it was.
