Officials identify pedestrian struck, killed by multiple cars on Independence Blvd.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said a pedestrian was killed after being struck by multiple vehicles on Independence Boulevard in east Charlotte.

The incident occurred on outbound Independence Boulevard, just before 9 p.m. Friday.

Upon arrival, officers found the pedestrian lying in the road and several cars stopped at the scene.

Investigators said the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross East Independence Boulevard near Krefeld Drive.

The vehicle was traveling west in the left lane and hit the pedestrian on the front driver's side corner.

The pedestrian was thrown into the eastbound lanes of Independence Boulevard after impact and was struck by five additional vehicles.

The driver that initially hit the pedestrian immediately pulled over and was struck by a vehicle while speaking with emergency officials, but was not injured.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

No drivers or passengers were injured.

According to officials, the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and the street was not well lit.

There are no marked crosswalks or pedestrian crossing signals near the scene.

Officials later identified the pedestrian as 18-year-old Sierra Anitra Ratliff.
