According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, officers found Allison Carter, 42, lying in the road in front of a 2000 Ford Expedition with front end damage. Carter was unresponsive. Medic transported her to Carolinas Medical Center with critical injuries.

The driver of the Ford was not injured and called 911 to report the crash, police said.

The car was traveling west on Sunset Road in the right lane. It was dark, the street was not lit and there was light precipitation. Police said Carter was attempting to cross Sunset Road and stepped directly into the path of the Ford.

Carter was struck by the front driver's side of the SUV. Police said excessive speed and alcohol use are not contributing factors in the collision.
