Police: Rock Hill teen killed, 5 injured in multi-vehicle crash

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A local community is hurting after a high school student died in a multi-vehicle crash Friday afternoon that also hospitalized several others.

Officials said 16-year old Chaella Woodson, a student at South Pointe High School, was pronounced dead at the scene of a multi-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in York County.

According to police, three vehicles were traveling on Heckle Boulevard and Sturgis Farm Road around 2 p.m. when one of the vehicles crossed into the center lane and collided with two other vehicles in the opposite lane.

Officials told Channel 9, Woodson was a passenger in a Ford driven by another juvenile.

The Ford was heading north and the two other vehicles involved in the crash were heading southbound, according to police.

Officials said one of the drivers of the southbound cars was 18 years old and the other was 25 years old.

According to police, both drivers and two juvenile passengers in the car driven by the 18-year-old were transported to Piedmont Medical Center with injuries.

Officers said the juvenile driving the Ford was taken to Carolina Medical Center with injuries.

Channel 9 spoke with one of the drivers, who said the crash happened so quickly she did not have time to react.

She said she now has a broken hand, a busted lip, and a bruised leg, but said she is thankful to be alive.

Rock Hill Schools posted on Facebook, sending condolences to the family of the victim.

Channel 9's Briana Harper learned Woodson was a junior and on the South Pointe High School Varsity Volleyball team.

Officials said the driver who Woodson was with was a teammate.

At last check, this teammate was still in the hospital with serious injuries.

"As a parent, those stories really hit home and hit hard," resident Sarah Mason said. "As a mom, it's definitely heartbreaking. A mom of two little ones, I can't imagine what the families are going through. York County is definitely a tight knit community so I'm not surprised to hear all the outpouring of support."
