Man accused of hitting bicyclist with car after argument over $1

HICKORY, N.C. — Police in Hickory are asking for the public’s help finding a man who they say intentionally hit a bicyclist with his car after an argument over a dollar.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon in a parking lot along Lenoir Rhyne Boulevard in Hickory.

According to witnesses, Thalmus Linder and 35-year-old Todd Tilley got into an argument over a dollar bill. That’s when police said Linder got into his car and repeatedly ran over Tilley, who was riding a bicycle.

Bystander Chase Everett told Channel 9 he witnessed the moment Tilley was run over.

“And he started to hit him right there,” he said as he pointed out the scene.

Shattered pieces of the 35-year-old’s mountain bike could still be seen on the ground in the parking lot.

“Hit him about three times,” Everett said. “Backed up, hit him. Backed up and hit him again. Did it a third time and then exited out and took off.”

Eyewitnesses said the suspect took off in an older model white Chevrolet Malibu heading south along Lenoir Rhyne Boulevard.

One eyewitness was so shocked by what happened, she would only talk with us by phone, recounting the horror of what she saw.

“I screamed so loud and I just freaked out,” she said. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, he’s killing him.’”

Tilley was taken to Baptist Hospital with serious injuries and is in stable condition after undergoing surgery. Warrants for attempted first-degree murder have been issued for Linder, but he has not yet been found.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call 911.
