Power outage affects thousands in Charlotte Friday evening

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An issue at the Kenilworth substation knocked out power to thousands of Duke Energy customers Friday evening during the start of a severe heat wave.

Nearly 3,500 customers were without power in the Myers Park and Ideal Way neighborhoods, with several hundred more scattered throughout Mecklenburg County as of 6 p.m.

In addition, traffic signals at several intersections in the Myers Park and Ideal Way areas were malfunctioning.

Duke Energy said it had crews headed to the substation to address the problem. It gave an estimated power restoration time of 8:30 p.m. for the affected customers.
