Red Cross sees 'severe' shortage of blood donations in Charlotte area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Red Cross officials said they are facing a severe blood shortage and are seeking donations in order to prevent a shortage in the upcoming winter months.

Key factors to the shortage were fewer blood drives in September and October and Hurricane Michael and Florence, according to a release.

"This time of year, as many give thanks for family, friends, and good health, it's important to remember that patients across the country cannot survive without your generosity," Senior Vice President of Red Cross Biomedical Services Cliff Numark said.

Officials said they are in need of an additional 4,300 blood drives nationally and 280 blood drives in the Charlotte area in December, January, and February to help prevent a shortage through the winter.

Red Cross said donations often decline around the winter holidays and severe weather can lead to blood drive cancellations.

"From traumas to ongoing cancer treatments, the need for blood doesn't stop for the holidays. People can give back -- and help those in need -- by making a lifesaving blood or platelet donation now and hosting a blood drive in the weeks to come," Numark said.
