Report: Rural roads in Carolinas among the deadliest in US

A new report puts both Carolinas in the top five nationally in the highest rate of deaths on rural roads.

The transportation research nonprofit TRIP found North Carolina ranked third nationally while South Carolina ranked fourth in death rates on rural roads.

The same report also analyzed the condition of bridges, finding North Carolina to be the ninth worst nationally for bridges with structural deficiencies. According to the report, 12% of bridges across the Tar Heel State are structurally deficient, while nearly half are listed as in only “fair” condition.
