‘We’re trying our best’: Only handful of applicants show up to restaurant job fair

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The struggle to find people to work has been a lingering impact of the pandemic, especially in the service industry. Many restaurants are struggling, running shorter hours, or reducing menus because of staffing problems.

About a dozen restaurants took part in a job fair on Monday in Rock Hill -- and about six applicants showed up.

The turnout wasn’t great, but businesses are hoping to build on the experience. Texas Roadhouse was one of the restaurants at the job fair. Its Rock Hill location is down 50 employees.

“Every restaurant is understaffed and we’re all doing our best,” said Brian Howell, restaurant owner. “And we’re just asking the public to be forgiving for us, because we’re trying our best.”

Some places are offering signing bonuses and better benefits to attract workers.
