Rival high school football team rallies behind teen who lost everything in house fire

HICKORY, N.C. — Flames destroyed a home in Catawba County this weekend and now, a high school football team from a neighboring county is trying to help the family.

A fire heavily damaged a home on Valley Field Road, just south of Hickory last Saturday night.

Channel 9 learned the family had just moved in two weeks ago and was using a fire pit. Investigators said the family thought the fire was out but it wasn’t, spreading to the home and two cars.

Now, the East Burke High School football team is reaching out to the community to help a teenager who lost everything. Neighbors said that teenager plays at Foard High School and played against East Burke last Thursday.

“I think it is a blessing,” neighbor Laura Lawrence said. “And I think God has put us here to help one another. I don’t care where you are or how far you are to help someone, we as a community are going to do something to help the family out.”
