Settlement reached with Whitewater Center in teen's brain-eating amoeba death

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The family of an Ohio teen who died from a brain-eating amoeba has reached a settlement with the Whitewater Center.

The lawsuit that was filed by Lauren Seitz's father, James, claimed the west Charlotte facility “negligently breached its duty of care owed to Lauren” and failed to properly regulate the water, train its employees on how to care for the water and didn’t warn visitors about dangers that come with untreated and unregulated water.

Channel 9 obtained federal documents that show a tentative settlement has been reached. We asked the Whitewater Center for a statement, but were told they cannot comment on the litigation.

Seitz died from a brain-eating amoeba after she was thrown from a raft during a June 2016 trip to the center with her church.
