CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carowinds said several rides were stopped at the park Monday after construction caused a power interruption.

A Carowinds spokesperson said the interruption was caused by a construction issue at a nearby hotel.

Officials had to cycle power back for ride safely.

Park officials said people were safely escorted off the rides, and most of the rides will be put back into operation.

Ada Wharton and her friends from Greensboro came expecting a day of adventure.

"It was very disappointing, and I don't think we are likely to come back soon," Wharton said.

They saw signs warning of limited attractions and thought it meant a couple of rides were closed.

They only got on three rides.

"They were the only rides that were open,” Wharton said. “Even the water park, half of it was closed."

Later she saw a list of 10 rides that were closed.

Officials said Fury325, Hurler and Drop Tower were directly impacted by the power problem and will stay closed until Duke Energy can assess the issue.

Wharton said some people were stuck on Fury325.

"They had to exit the car onto one of the evacuation platforms," Wharton said.

A spokesperson sent Channel 9 a statement saying in part, “As always, the safety of our guests and associates is our highest priority.”

Wharton said when they asked for a rain check, they were rudely told the park does give those or refunds but instead, they were given a stamp on the arm and told to come back later in the day.

A Carowinds spokesperson said they handled requests for exchange days or refunds on an individual basis, but workers were primarily focused on making sure rides were safe.
