Sheriff: Man arrested for killing of grandfather, assault on mother

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — The grandson of a man killed in Rowan County was arrested Thursday in connection with the case, according to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

J.D. Furr, 87, was killed in an attack at his home and J.D. Furr’s daughter, Sandra Steen, 62, was attacked.

Rowan County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jeff David Steen, 40, of Albemarle. Jeff Steen is the grandson of J.D. Furr and the son of Sandra Steen, according to police.

He is charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder and one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Jeff Steen was the person who called 911 on the morning on Nov. 6, according to police. He requested medical responders and law enforcement responded to 6225 River Road in Richfield.

Jeff Steen was given no bond when presented to the magistrate following his arrest.  He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center and will have a first appearance Friday morning.

Sandra Steen continues in the recovery process and is undergoing rehabilitation after the assault, according to police.

Steen's neighbors told Eyewitness News they weren't surprised by his arrest.

"I don't know I just had a feeling that maybe he had something to do with it, said Pam Kemp, neighbor.
