Sheriff: Killer shot self in head after confronted by officers

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant said a preliminary autopsy showed Troy Whisnant shot himself in the head after being confronted by officers.

Whisnant killed his father, stepmother, a U.S. Forest Service officer and his K-9 Wednesday.

Whisenant also said one of the officer's rounds also hit Whisnant.

Whisnant killed U.S. Forest Service Officer Jason Crisp, whose funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday. Read more about Crisp's funeral here.
