Police arrest suspect accused of shooting, killing man at student housing complex near UNCC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have arrested a suspect accused of shooting and killing a man Monday night at an apartment complex near the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Officials said they have charged 23-year-old Fuaad Ali with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

CMPD said Ali became a suspect because of information and evidence gathered throughout the investigation. Officials said once warrants were issued, CMPD, along with the US Secret Service, the State Bureau of Investigation and the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, arrested Ali without incident.

Police said the shooting happened around 8 p.m. after an argument outside an apartment at 901 Place Apartments on Forty Niner Avenue near Pavilion Boulevard.

The apartments are off campus and not directly affiliated with UNCC.

Police said the victim, identified as 22-year-old Jamontae Morris, died at the hospital on Tuesday.

Neighbors said they were surprised a shooting happened at the complex.

“It could be anyone walking down to their homes, you know?” neighbor Trendel Tutson said.

Residents in the building where the shooting happened said they heard a large commotion.

"I heard a lot of arguing downstairs, so I don't know what they had going on like a big crowd or something like that, and I just started hearing gunshots and stuff like that,” resident Jaleak Gerlitzki said.

Officers said they’ve had issues at the apartment complex for years. Two years ago, four people were shot there and one of them died.

Police said they’re going to give the area extra attention. Channel 9 saw two squad cars at the complex Tuesday afternoon.

It's unclear if the victim was a student or not.
