Shots fired into off-campus apartments near UNCC, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities are searching for a gunman who shot 10 rounds into an apartment complex near UNC Charlotte.

The shooting happened at the 901 Place apartments on Forty Niner Avenue on Tuesday afternoon.

"I was in my apartment and all I heard was a bunch of pow, pow, pow," a resident, who did not want to be identified, said.

It is the second time this month shots rang out at the University City apartment complex.

"I was, like, ‘What the heck?’ So, I said to my best friend who is staying with us this week, ‘Those are gunshots,'" the resident said.

The gunman drove away in a victim’s car after taking her purse and keys, according to a police report.

"It's really disturbing," the resident said.

Many UNCC students live in the off-campus apartment complex, which was the scene of a homicide investigation just about a month ago.

A 22-year-old man died after being shot there.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department spent the weekend nearby investigating a carjacking at gunpoint and a shooting at two separate complexes filled with students.

The resident Channel 9 spoke with said he has had enough.

“I feel like it’s getting worse,” he said. “It’s become a problem. Honestly, I just wish it would end, you know?”

Police and UNCC officials are trying to strengthen the Niner Choice Program.

Apartment complexes that participate have to follow certain rules, such as having student-only housing, having residents go through background checks and holding mandatory safety meetings.
