Smoke detectors help Kannapolis homeowners escape fire unharmed

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Firefighters were trying to determine what started a fire that caused extensive damage to a home in Kannapolis early Tuesday.

Fire crews were called around 1:45 a.m. to the home on Jackson Park Road and saw heavy smoke coming from the house.

The flames had extended to the attic of the home before firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in about 20 minutes.

The people living inside were able to escape unharmed, officials said, thanks to smoke detectors.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
