Some people say crowds were smaller than normal at Fourth of July fireworks show in Tega Cay

TEGA CAY, S.C. — Finding a good fireworks show was tough this year with so many canceled. Police in Tega Cay were worried about the city’s plan to go on with their display.

The concern was that with nowhere else to go, big crowds would descend on the shows that were still happening.

Channel 9′s Erin Edwards spoke to some people who go every year and said the crowds this year were actually smaller than they’re used to.

Tega Cay police originally asked to cancel the show. Earlier this week, the police chief sent a letter to city leaders asking them not to hold the Fourth of July celebrations this year.

The letter warned the police department might not have the manpower to handle the crowds since every other show is canceled and that people might flood the city.

Days after, the city canceled the Fourth of July parade but decided to still go on with the fireworks show. And crowds at the show were under control.

The parking lot to the golf and conference center, which Channel 9 was told usually fills up hours before the show, didn’t fill up until around 9 p.m. People who showed up later were sent to a nearby park and elementary school.

Some people said they’re glad the city decided to still hold the show.

“I think that the city is taking the right precautions and limiting parking and just regulating the whole situation, so I do feel safe,” neighbor Angie Heidel said.

Edwards said she hadn’t seen anyone wearing masks. But for the most part, people were social distancing.

“So far everyone looks friendly, and everyone’s keeping their distance, so that’s good. I feel comfortable,” Charlotte resident Melissa Saez said.
