Motorcyclist killed in crash on Sharon Road, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — A motorcyclist was killed in a crash that happened Friday night on Sharon Road in the SouthPark area of Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Police said the collision occurred Friday night on South Sharon Road near Sharon View Road. A driver of a motorcycle was pronounced deceased after colliding with a vehicle.

According to a news release that was sent on Monday, the driver of the motorcycle was identified as 35-year-old Anthony Maerten. CMPD said Maerten was driving on Sharon Road when a Subaru Ascent in the oncoming lanes tried to turn left onto Sharon View Road. As the Subaru was turning left, Maerten tried to brake but then slid into the passenger side of the Subaru.

CMPD said Maerten was wearing an approved helmet and had a valid motorcycle endorsement on his driver license.

CMPD’S Major Crash Unit said it is continuing to investigate the collision. Police said it’s not clear if impairment or speed are factors for Maerten in the crash.
