Steve's Coats for Kids exchanges coats for tickets at Checkers game

Jamison Palermo is not only a fan of the Charlotte Checkers, he plays hockey himself.

Palermo won a hockey stick autographed by Checkers players in a drawing Saturday, which he was entered into because he donated to Channel 9's annual Steve's Coats for Kids Drive.

Channel 9 chief meteorologist Steve Udelson greeted Palermo, his grandfather Tom O’Neil, and other fans who donated at the game.

"I thought it'd be cool to donate two coats to two kids who didn't have coats,” Palermo said.

“I'm really proud of him,” O’Neil said. “You know, he grew out of his coats and they're still in good shape, so somebody should use them."

All fans who donated coats at the Checkers game Saturday night received a ticket to a future game.

"This is probably the most we've ever collected,” said Tera Black with the Checkers. “it makes me really proud of our fans."

Sunday is the final day to donate coats. You can donate at Ashley Homestore, Hendrick Honda and ER Plumbing Services.
