CMPD investigating after stolen rental car crashes into home

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating after a stolen car crashed into a house on Academy Street in east Charlotte Monday morning.

Authorities said the driver of the car told them he went into the Mike's Grocery store at the corner of Academy Street and The Plaza just before noon. He said he left his car --  a rental car -- unattended with the keys left inside.

The driver said that when he came out of the store someone was trying to steal the car and crashed into the house less than a block away.

Police were on scene working to confirm that information and were questioning the victim.

Witnesses said they saw three men running down Academy after the wreck.

Nobody in the house was hurt.
