Students cope with toilets out of order, clogged sinks at JCSU

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Toilets not working and clogged sinks are the latest issues in a string of complaints about the living conditions at Johnson C. Smith University.

The start of the semester at JCSU was delayed by two weeks because mold was growing in the dorms. Now students claim they don’t have working sinks or toilets.

In video sent to Channel 9 by a student at the university, you can see nearly every single bathroom stall in the freshman dorm has a “closed" note on it.

A parent also contacted Channel 9, warning about a broken pipe and no running water.

Eyewitness News checked on the problem and discovered it had been traced to a water leak near campus. Crews were working on the leak Wednesday.

This morning, students are desperate for help.

Since JCSU is a private university, the county and state health department cannot check the dorms. Instead, the county can only examine the cafeteria and the pool -- everything else is up to the school.

In the video at the top of this webpage, Eyewitness News reporter DaShawn Brown learned how students are coping with the problems.
