Suspect arrested in deadly north Charlotte hit-and-run

CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Saturday in a press release that a man has been arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run in north Charlotte on Thursday. Margaret Rutledge, 51, was killed in a hit-and-run shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday at the 5500 block of North Tryon Street, according to police. CMPD was contacted by attorney Claudia Soto, who said that the suspect in the hit-and-run contacted her and wanted to turn himself in. Detectives with the Major Crash Investigations Unit met with Soto and Victor Alfonso-Manzano Mendez. Mendez confessed to being the driver of the white Chevrolet van that struck and killed Rutledge. Mendez was arrested and charged with felony hit and run and no operators license and was booked into the Mecklenburg County Processing Center.
