Tanker leaking ammonia shuts down major Concord highways

CONCORD, N.C. — Two Concord highways were shut down Wednesday after a tanker carrying ammonia started leaking, deputies said.

Just after 3:30 a.m., crews shut down Highway 601 between Cold Springs Road South and Parks Lafferty Road, near Highway 200, Cabarrus County deputies said. Highway 200 was also closed about half a mile away from leak near the Bost Grist Mill.

Cabarrus County deputies said they did not yet know if anyone was hurt in the spill, but did say one of their deputies was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure after responding to the scene.

Deputies said there were no evacuations in the area in response to the spill.

There was no information available on how the leak began, or if anyone will be charged in connection to the incident. Channel 9 has reached out to learn more.

Channel 9 could see emergency crews still responding to the scene at 4:45 a.m. Wednesday.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
