Teen accused of sexually assaulting Winthrop student at gunpoint denied bond

ROCK HILL, S.C. — A Rock Hill teenager accused of sexually assaulting and robbing a woman at gunpoint near Winthrop University’s campus earlier this year will be staying in jail.

After hearing the details of the case, it took the judge a matter of seconds to deny bond for 16-year-old Terry Tyler.

Tyler has been behind bars since February when police said he followed a Winthrop student to her off-campus apartment and asked her to let him into the building claiming he didn't have his pass.

Once she did, police said he held a gun to her head, forced her back outside to some railroad tracks and sexually assaulted her. They said he then took her keys and purse.

Police said Tyler was later found and arrested while driving her car.

They said he also threatened to kill the victim if she filed a police report.

Prosecutors said Tyler confessed to the crime.

"The facts are pretty egregious and particularly heinous. This is a stranger rape at gunpoint. This is literally every woman's worst nightmare,” Assistant Solicitor Sharon Ohayon said.

The judge called Tyler an extreme danger to the community before denying him bond.

The victim was in the courtroom but did not speak.
