This Charlotte brewery wins top honors in annual competition

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Lower Left Brewing Co. took top honors at the 2021 NC Brewers Cup. It was named NC Brewery of the Year — and NC New Brewery of the Year.

The annual brewers competition received 803 entries from 110 independent craft breweries — its largest competition to date. Medals were awarded in 31 style-based beer categories, including the “NC Homegrown” category where brews had at least 55% of dry-weight ingredients sourced from North Carolina agricultural products.

In total, 28 Charlotte-area beers were recognized.

“We always felt that we had what it took to be viable and definitely had the recipes to become a destination brewery. We never imagined recognition like this would come so soon,” says Tim Curtis.

He, wife Casey and head brewer Alex Shoenthal are behind that venture.

Lower Left snagged gold medals for three beers — Edge of Precipice Pale Ale, Cemetery Gates Smoked Porter and Three Hour Tour, a coconut blonde ale. Its Juicy McJuiceFace New England IPA received a silver medal.
