Time running out for lottery winner in Gastonia

GASTONIA, N.C. — There’s a cool hundred grand out there waiting for a lucky lottery winner to claim it, but there’s only about a week left before the prize expires.

The North Carolina Education Lottery says someone won a $100,000 prize from a Powerball drawing that happened on Oct. 5. It was sold at the Lake Wylie Mini Mart on Union Road in Gastonia.

But if it’s not claimed by April 4, the money will be lost.

You might remember the lotto mania around that time, when the jackpot kept climbing to a peak of more than a billion dollars. So while millions of people across the U.S. were clamoring for their chance at their own millions, at least one person around Gastonia matched enough numbers for a big prize.

Lottery officials say the winning ticket matched four of the white balls and the red Powerball drawing, and they’re hoping that it’ll be found. The winning numbers that night were 26, 30, 33, 37, 62, and 6.

“Search everywhere you keep your tickets and double-check any you have to see if you have the winning ticket,” said Mark Michalko, executive director of the lottery.

Lottery winners have 180 days to claim their prizes. Big winning tickets have to be taken to the lottery headquarters in Raleigh.
