6:30 a.m. Troy Whisnant's parents' vehicle found in someone's yard in McDowell County
 
Whisnant stole a car and headed back to Burke County, according to police. He stole another vehicle and crashed on Highway 181 near Oak Hill grocery store, police say.
 
7:40 a.m. Whisnant captured on surveillance video, walked into store then behind store and stole wrecker truck.
 
9 a.m. Whisnant's stepmother's coworker calls police saying Rhonda Whisnant missed worked.
 
Deputies discover the bodies of Troy Whisnant's father, Levi, and stepmother during welfare check at home on Fish Hatchery Road.
 
Sheriff says they believe the couple had been killed days before.
 
Troy Whisnant announced as person of interest. Deputies found stolen wrecker abanonded near command post.
 
2:30 p.m. Neighbor calls 911 to report someone breaking into a shed. Whisnant stole man's 12-guage shotgun and pistol and ran into woods, police say.
 
2:55 p.m. Whisnant shot and killed Officer Jason Crisp and his K9, Maros, with stolen shotgun, police say. He took Crisp's gun and ammunition, police say.
 
4:41 p.m. Officers shot and killed Whisnant.
