Toddler stung 25 times by swarm of yellow jackets in SC park

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A toddler is are recovering after he was stung 25 times by yellow jackets in a Charleston park over the weekend.

The 2-year-old’s grandmother, Nancy Orvin Brumby, said they were taking a walk in the park when her grandson was swarmed by the wasps.

“Next thing I know I see these insects coming up from the ground and I realize what’s happening,” said Brumby.

She said the boy’s mother ripped his shirt off and called 911.

“The ambulance did finally come but again terrified watching him every second after the main crisis was over, what was his reaction going to be?” said Brumby.

Both the grandmother and the boy’s mom had at least 10 stings each, but she said the 2-year-old was stung 25 times, mainly on his back.

After a closer inspection of the park, a rare yellow jacket ground nest was uncovered, still swarming with stinging insects.

Charleston Parks Director Jason Kronsberg sent out a team to exterminate the nest.

The family is expected to be OK.
