Topgolf to open new facility in Charlotte June 9

The brand-new Topgolf facility will open in Charlotte on June 9 off Arrowood Road right next to I-485.

Anchor Scott Wickersham got the very first look inside.

He also asked Topgolf managers about complaints of noise and light pollution at other locations.

It’s a triple-decker driving range with 102 bays with an open-air bar and restaurant mixed in.

“Similar to bowling, you rent a bay with golf clubs we provide and hit microchipped gold balls into targets,” a Topgolf manager said.

Topgolf is expected to help boost an already growing part of Charlotte and could even attract more development.

It hired 500 people and 100 of the new employees will be full time.

Topgolf is expected to bring an economic impact of $265 million over a decade and it said it didn't receive any incentives to build here.

But Topgolf hasn't been without controversy.

In Gilbert, Arizona, one person on Facebook called the floodlights at night "very distracting and blinding" when driving by.

Sarah Brown wrote on her Facebook page, "I can see the lights from my house. They are a bit obnoxious.”

Anchor Scott Wickersham contacted Brown, who has since moved away, partially because of the lights. She called them a big nuisance.

At the Charlotte location, the lights will be on until midnight most days. They will be on until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday with music, as well.

The good news is that it's surrounded mostly by woods and some don't expect an issue.

Von Dipe is from Greensboro, but he said he'd make the trip back to try it out.

“It may bother people, but it’s something for the community,” Dipe said.

A town manager in Gilbert said Topgolf did all it could to address neighbors’ concerns.

Charlotte’s Topgolf said if anyone has a problem, just call.

Topgolf would not disclose how much the Charlotte location cost to build.

The company is already building a second location in the University area.
