Tractor-trailer carrying calcium nitrate breaks axle on U.S. 29

CONCORD, N.C. — An eighteen-wheel tractor-trailer carrying calcium nitrate suffered an axle break Thursday morning, according a spokesman for the city of Concord.
 
The accident happened on U.S. 29 in Concord near Roberta Church Road. Officials with North Carolina Department of Transportation said both directions of U.S. 29 were shut down around noon. The Concord spokesman said the road reopened around 1 p.m.
 
The tractor-trailer did not overturn and the contents of the truck were contained in the trailer. Police, fire, hazmat and NCDOT officials were on the scene as a precaution.
