Trees topple on roads, houses in Charlotte area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A tree toppled on another house in north Charlotte on Saturday morning, Medic said.

The people inside the house on Long Grass Court near Peach Tree and Auten roads were able to get out safely.

Neighbor Cathy Daniels said she rushed out of her house when she heard the tree fall.

"It was just such a loud boom. It sounded like a bomb dropped," Daniels said.

Daniels said that the tree fell on her neighbor's daughter's bedroom, but she was not home.

Neighbors were already concerned about the many large trees surrounding their houses.

"My neighbor even said it. He said, 'We've been dodging a bullet for years over here, and it was a matter of time,'" Daniels said.

Duke Energy crews and police are so busy that early Saturday no one is taking care of a downed tree in east Charlotte.

Reporter Joe Bruno was at the busy intersection where an older, larger tree toppled on a power line, causing outages in the area, including the traffic lights for the intersection.

A small fire broke out in the tree when the power line came down, but it burned out before firefighters arrived, officials said.

The corner of south Wendover and Sharon roads is one of the busier sections of east Charlotte during the day, but Saturday morning no resources are being deployed to take care of this issue.

A small barricade was set up, but it hasn't really done much. Bruno watched as several cars rolled through the intersection.

Overnight in north Charlotte, a tree fell on a home and caused a hole in the roof.

The tree fell on Rodey Avenue in north Charlotte near Statesville and Atando avenues.

“The fire department came and they straightened it out; said it should hold for a little bit. Its got about a 3-inch hole in the ceiling,” the homeowner said.

No one was hurt when the tree fell.

The Red Cross disaster team is helping two adults who live there.

Another tree snagged utility lines when it fell around 10 p.m. Friday on Morningside Drive.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have shut down the 1500 block of Morningside Drive as a precaution.

Officers are not sure if the downed lines are power lines.
