Troopers: 1 dead after tractor trailer overturns on I-40

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers were on the scene of a deadly tractor trailer accident Thursday morning on Interstate 40 in Burke County, near Connelly Springs.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. in the eastbound lanes, near mile marker 113.

According to officials, the tractor trailer drifted towards the median, hit the inside guardrail, overcorrected and flipped over, blocking the right lane near Rutherford College Road.

The driver of the big rig died in the accident and another person inside the cab was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Troopers do not think weather played a role in the crash.

All lanes of I-40 were back open around 12 p.m.
