Troopers: 7 people die on NC highways during holiday weekend

Troopers said seven people died on North Carolina highways during the July 4 weekend.

The troopers said the holiday weekend began at Thursday at 6 p.m. and ran until midnight Sunday.

They investigated twice as many deaths last July 4 weekend.

One of this year's deadly crashes was in Iredell County.

Troopers said a pick-up truck carrying three children in the bed was speeding when it crashed about 16 miles north of Statesville on Taylor Springs Road.

The driver died.

The children are expected to survive.
