Troopers: Hit-and-run seriously injures councilwoman's daughter

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A crash caused major backups in south Charlotte Wednesday afternoon.

Chopper 9 flew over the scene on the Interstate 485 inner loop near Providence Road.

Troopers are now saying the accident was a result of a hit-and-run.

The victim in the crash is Christina Luther, who is the daughter of Indian Trail Town Councilwoman Darlene Luther.

Witnesses said a woman was trying to pass an SUV when the SUV sped up and slammed into the back of the car.

The SUV then took off, troopers said.

It took nearly two dozen firefighters to get the Luther out of her car.

She was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center where officials said she is in a medically induced coma.
