Officials: Deputy shoots, kills mental patient during transport

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Troopers and sheriff's deputies were investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting on Interstate 40 in Iredell County Monday afternoon.
 
The shooting occurred near Swann Road.

A Davidson County deputy shot and killed a mental patient during transport, officials said.

Iredell County deputies said they received a call around 3:30 p.m. from the sheriff who said a deputy was struggling with a person on the interstate.

While Iredell County deputies were on the way to the scene, they received a callback saying shots were fired and that it was a Davidson County deputy that was involved.

Paramedics arrived and performed CPR, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called to the scene to assist in the investigation, which is standard procedure with any officer-involved shooting.

The name of the victim has not been released.

I-40 west was temporarily down to one lane while officials investigated the incident.
