Two earthquakes recorded hours apart rattle North Carolina mountains

CHEROKEE, N.C. — Two separate earthquakes shook part of the North Carolina mountains, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The first, a 2.6-magnitude quake, was recorded around 11 p.m. Wednesday near Cherokee. Several people reportedly called 911 to say they felt it.

The other quake, a magnitude 2.5, was reported around 8 a.m. Thursday in the same location.

Neither quake was strong enough to cause any damage.

The USGS said the Eastern Tennessee seismic zone is one of the most active in the southeast and it extends into parts of Georgia and Alabama.
