UNCC police focus on student safety

Some UNC-Charlotte students were on edge this week after several recent crimes.

Channel 9 reported on Monday about a student’s threat to shoot up the campus.

Also, CMPD announced the arrest of David Kenney who is accused of raping a female student on a path near campus.

Campus Police Chief Jeff Baker said there have been some high-profile cases recently, but he said, overall, the crime rate on campus is low.

While some students are concerned about recent crime, they also said they believe campus police are working to make them safe.

“I absolutely feel safe. Those blue lights are everywhere. Campus police are very visible,” Anna Holland said.

Baker encouraged students to use the LiveSafe App, which allows them to let friends know where they’re going and when they arrive. He said officers also plan to patrol the new light rail station, which is slated to open on campus Friday.
