2 arrested after UNCC student attacked, robbed outside campus library

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two men beat and robbed a University of North Carolina Charlotte student early Tuesday morning at the campus library, police said.

The attack happened around 3:30 a.m. outside the Atkins Library on UNCC's campus.

Surveillance video shows two men, who were not students, walk inside the campus library. Police said the men walked back outside and that’s when the assault happened.

The attackers stole the student’s phone.

Computer engineering student Josh Ayers said he’s not surprised that it happened.

“Do I feel unsafe? No,” Ayers said. “It can happen anywhere.”

Investigators identified the suspects as Jahiem Vandiver and Dominic Robinson Jeter.

Officials said someone saw Jeter and Vandiver beat, rob and attack the student, so they contacted police using the LiveSafe app.

Police knew where the attack happened by tracking the GPS signal associated with the app.

Vandiver and Jeter were arrested shortly after the attack.

“That meant everything,” UNCC Police Chief Jeff Baker said. “By sending us a message saying, ‘Help,’ all of our officers immediately converged to the library. We had total eight officers working.”

This was the first robbery at UNCC this year. There were two robberies in 2018.
