Man accused of firing shot in road rage incident in Union Co. arrested

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — A man accused of pulling a gun during a road rage incident on July 25 in Union County has been arrested, deputies said.

Chandler Marsh Williams, 22, was charged Tuesday with assault by pointing a gun.

A driver told deputies he was crossing Old Charlotte Highway on Wesley Chapel Road when the driver of a black Ford F350 behind him started honking his horn.

He said the driver of the truck followed him down Wesley Chapel Road and passed him as they approached the roundabout at Goldmine Road.

The victim said the driver stopped in the road, got out of the truck and pointed a gun. The man threatened to kill the victim and fired a shot before driving away.

Kathleen Fiore lives near where the road rage incident happened last month.

"I didn't expect anything like that because this is a nice neighborhood where we are," Fiore said.

Deputies said the victim followed the truck into Mineral Springs before losing sight of it.

Crime scene investigators recovered a shell casing in the area where the shooting happened.

Investigators said in road rage cases like this, it's always best not to engage.

"The best thing to do is just let it go. There's no winners in that situation," said Tony Underwood, with the Union County Sheriff's Office.

There was no damage and no one was hurt, but Sheriff Eddie Cathey reminded drivers about the dangers.

"People get upset at other drivers over things they often have no control over. Too many times, drivers are in a hurry and allow their emotions to get the best of them. Getting out of a vehicle to confront someone with a gun is never a good idea. Thankfully, no one was hurt in this matter but it could have turned out a lot worse," Cathey said in a statement.
