Union Co. school board member to be laid to rest

MONROE, N.C. — A Union County School Board member who served for decades will be laid to rest Friday.

John Crowder died of a stroke last week at the age of 77.

His death came just days after he led a controversial vote to send thousands of students to different schools in Union County.

Families who are fighting the redistricting said they would hold off on filing a lawsuit out of respect for Crowder.

The funeral is at 2 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Monroe.
