Powerful cold front pushes into area with threat of heavy rain

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The meteorologists of Severe Weather Center 9 continue to track a developing weather situation that will unfold overnight Sunday through early afternoon Monday.

A powerful cold front will team with the moisture leftover from what was Tropical Storm Karen to bring the threat of heavy rain and gusty winds to the Carolinas.

An isolated severe thunderstorm cannot be ruled out. The rain will push through the mountains overnight, with the heaviest, steadiest rain pushing into the Charlotte area during the morning drive.

Rain totals will range from a half inch to 1.5 inches, with the highest totals over the mountains. The system is moving quickly, so the steady rain should be long gone by the evening commute.

Once this system goes by, more typical fall weather returns.
